Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act
The Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) is designed to promote accuracy, fairness and privacy of information of every "consumer reporting agency" (CRA). Most CRA's are credit bureaus that gather and sell information about you. They sell such information as if you pay your bills on time or filled for bankruptcy to Creditors, Employers, Landlords and other Businesses.
What You Need to Know:
1) You can contact your state or local consumer protect agency and/or Attorney Generals Office to learn your rights.

2) It is mandatory that you be informed if any of the information in your file has been used against you in any way.

3) If anyone uses the information in your CRA report against you (denying your  application for credit, insurance, or employment)  they must inform you of this and supply you with the Name, Address, and Phone Number of the CRA that gave them the consumer report.

4) You have the right to know what is in your CRA Report. The CRA must give you the information that is in your report at your request and a list of those who have viewed your report.

5) If someone has used the information against you, your CRA report is free. But you must request the report within 60 days from when you received a notice of action taken against you because of your CRA report.

6) You are entailed to one free CRA report within a twelve month period if you request it and can prove:

        a) You are unemployed and plan to seek employment within 60 days

        b)You are on welfare

c)Your CRA report is inaccurate due to fraud.

If you can not prove the above then you must pay for your report. Some CRA's  charge $8.00 for your report.

7) You can obtain a free once a year free credit report from all three credit beruas. The Federal Trade Commission offers you a website where you can obtain your free report.
